6 Things You Didn’t Know India Leads The World In

Pick up the list of potential super-powers of the 21st century and you’ll see India in the top 3 of each of those lists. The country has seen some outstanding progress, both socially and economically, over the past few decades which reflects its strength as a nation on the world map. Although, the subcontinent of India is still denoted as a developing nation, there are several feats to its name in different fields, amongst which are a few where India leaves every country behind to take the top spot.

When traveling to India to volunteer work, you must be aware of these achievements made by this wonderful country and its hardworking people. Volunteering India gives you the list of 6 such fields in which India leaves behind every other country to take the leading position;

1. Reading

Reading book

In this digital age, where most of the world’s population lives on technology (smart-phones, laptops, smart televisions, etc.), the habit of picking up a book, newspaper, magazine, or any printed material, and reading it has sublimed to a significant level. However, people in India have managed to keep the spirit of reading alive. On an average, an Indian reads for 10 hours 42 minutes per week, which is the highest reading rate anywhere in the world. Intellectual Indians!

2. Agriculture

Agriculture

India is one of the top agricultural producers in the world. However, there are several agri products which India is the leading producer of. This includes; cotton, millet, dry beans, chick peas, pulses, banana, mango, papaya, cumin, ginger, chilli pepper, and turmeric. Now, that’s a lot of food.

3. Postal Network

Postal Network

Another sturdy example of holding on to the roots of industrial mechanism. More than 2 centuries old postal network of India is the largest in the world, with close to 154,919 post offices located all over the country. And, what makes it more interesting is that out of all these post office, close to 90% of them are located in the rural areas of the country. In the times of emails, India has still managed to run the postal mails; successfully.

4. Stock Exchange

Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange may be the biggest stock exchange in the world when it comes to the highest market cap, but guess who outruns even the biggest stock exchange in the trade speed!? Yes! India. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is the world’s fastest stack exchange with a median trade speed of 6 microseconds. Usain Bolt of stock market!

5. Space Mission (Mars)

Mangalyaan

While all the “super-powers” in the world tried for years to touch base the surface of Mars, and finally tasted success after multiple failed attempts, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (also known as ‘Mangalyaan’) did the game in it’s very first attempt. And, with this, India became the first Asian country to achieve this feat and the fourth in the world, but the first and the only one to do it in one go. Talk about technology at its best.

6. Film Industry

film industry

India is globally known for its diversity through Cast and Culture; the two ‘C’s if we can put it that way. However, while volunteering in India you will understand that there are two different ‘C’s, which actually unites the entire nation to bring them under one common interest; Cricket and Cinema. The Indian film industry is the largest in the world with over 1600 films releasing every year on an average; in as much as 20 different languages. Quite dramatic!

Apart from this, India features in the top 5 list of several fields, such as;

– Largest railway networks (65000kms, 4th)

– Most populated countries in the world (1.25billion, 2nd)

– Earliest civilizations (Indus Valley Civilization 3300BCE, 2nd)

– Most number of languages spoken (427, 4th)

and many more.
